How common is glaucoma?

Among white people, glaucoma is known to affect about 1-2% of people over 40 years old, and about 5% of those over 70 years old. In black people, glaucoma is more common and may occur at a younger age.

In the United Kingdom, glaucoma accounts for approximately 10% of people who are registered as blind.
