Will I need surgery?
For open-angle glaucoma, if eye drops do not help, your ophthalmologist may suggest laser treatment to improve drainage to reduce fluid accumulation or an operation called a trabeculectomy to improve drainage of fluids from your eye. Sometimes drug treatment is still needed after surgery.
For sudden, acute glaucoma or angle-closure glaucoma, drugs may be used to relieve pain and reduce eye pressure. When the pain and inflammation have gone, your ophthalmologist may need to make a small hole in the outer part of your coloured part of the eye (iris) to relieve the obstruction and help the drainage of the fluid. This can be done by laser or a small operation.
